Cornstarch
If you have a pet or smoke odor in your carpet that you need an extra bit of help with, sprinkle cornstarch over the carpet and let it sit over night. In the morning just vacuum up and you will notice that the smell is gone! You will achieve the same result with baking soda.

Cooking odors
If you have been cooking fish or other fried foods in the home you can make a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice and spray over your carpet to help cut the smell of the grease in your home.

Soot and smoke
You can get soot and smoke off your carpets by sprinkling a large amount of salt over the stain, letting it sit for about an hour and then vacuum thoroughly

Vomit smells
After removing the vomit from the carpet, let the carpet dry out until morning. Make a paste of baking soda and warm water, rubbing this paste into the carpet and then sprinkle some additional dry baking soda over the carept and let this sit for a few hours. When the paste is dry, vacuum it up, and scrape as needed to remove all the paste. This removes the smells that you thought would be there forever!

Freshen up your carpets
When ever a carpet needs a freshen up, do the same sprinkle baking soda over the carpet. Then vacuum up a few minutes later. It stops your vacuum from smelling too!
